Martin Vickers MP had the courtesy to reply to my email regarding the Israeli action in Gaza : Dear Mr Guy, Thank you for your email. I share your horror at was is happening in Gaza, clearly the Israeli response is totally disproportionate to the threat which, though very real, does not warrant the present action. Over the last two years I have had the opportunity of visiting both Gaza and Israel. When in Gaza the UN escorted us to many parts of the city that sadly are now reduced to rubble. Even then we were advised that to enter the city was too dangerous and the Embassy urged us not to do so. However having taken a hazardous journey from Cairo we insisted on going ahead. I had the opportunity of meeting many of the ordinary citizens whose lives are being torn apart by the ongoing dispute. The delegation I was part of also met some very suspect characters who control much of what takes place there. I visited part of the tunnels network. Britain, the EU, the UN have both called for a ceasefire. Even the United States, who are the most influential seem to have minimal influence as it was John Kerry who brokered a ceasefire only for it to breakdown within hours. Reading between the lines of the Foreign Secretary’s interview with yesterday’s Sunday Telegraph it would appear that he is as exasperated with Israel as we are. You refer to the Government’s support for Israel. The Government’s position is that it supports the right of Israel to exist, not open-ended support for this action. will of course ensure that your comments are passed to the Foreign Office and if you would like to discuss the issues in more detail please contact my Constituency Office as detailed below to arrange an appointment at one of my constituency surgeries the next of which in Barton is on Friday 15th August..
