Here Are Hers I recently said something on Facebook that I would spank my kid for going into the street. This led to an attack from a stranger telling me how sorry she is that my parents chose violence and for what this has done to me, etc. She went on to say there is never an excuse and that if a kid chooses to go into a busy road (which is what the discussion was about – a 2 year old escaping out of the house while mom was in restroom and sitting in front of a city bus while it was stopped and refusing to move until someone called her ‘Birdie’ (hint, that was me) and that she (me) got spanked for it. I stated how my mom was dead-on with that. This woman stated that my mom should have sat me down and tried to understand my reasoning for exploring the world in this manner and that my mom should have respected me. I responded with, “I will never respect a kids reason for going into a busy street! Ever! And thank God my mother didn’t either!” I am now being barraged with all kinds of info on how anyone who spanks is screwed up in the head, etc. and this woman and another girl who is married to another woman are insisting that I and anyone who has been spanked are suffering from all kinds of damage that we haven’t admitted to ourselves. I disagree totally of course but would like to get other feedback. There is definitely a balance. It should be done on the butt and meant to be more jarring (shocking) then painful just to get the point across and not on any other place on the body. This goes along with your topic on kids respecting their parents. I’m not a big spanker but I would still spank my kid if they ran towards or into a busy road. Period.
