Mary Evans INSTALLATION AT THE SOUTHBANK STATION It Takes A Village... It takes a village... is a new wall-based installation commissioned by the Southbank Centre. ‘It takes a village to raise a child’ is a well known saying in many African cultures, and artist Mary Evans uses the phrase to anchor the piece in an environment that is simultaneously of the continent and of its diaspora. The saying is the kind of proverb that is clung to by Africans in the diaspora as a small vestige of ‘home’ and a utopian ideal from the continent by which to live. Mary Evans was born in Nigeria in 1963, and lives and works in London. She holds an MA in Fine Art from Goldsmiths College and a Postgraduate from the Rijksakademie Amsterdam. Evans creates site-specific, spatially dynamic installations working with a variety of materials (paper, rubber, paint, print and digital media) on a variety of surfaces (paper, walls, flooring, glass). Pattern is a strong leitmotif in her practice, however the work is rarely pure ornament and often reveals the historical, architectural or social threads of its source. Her research interests are centred on the social, political and historical frameworks of diaspora, migration, global mobility and exchange. Evans has participated nationally and internationally in exhibitions and residencies including, the BIAC (Biennale of International Contemporary Art) in Martinique, in 201, the Du Bois in our Time Commission at the Du Bois Centre Accra in 2014; the Arts & Literary Arts Residency at the Rockefeller Foundation, Bellagio Italy in 2014 and and currently Where Do I End And You Begin at the Edinburgh Arts Festival in City Art Centre, Edinburgh.
