“Mary has chosen the better part” (Lk 10:42) A friend of mine - TopicsExpress

“Mary has chosen the better part” (Lk 10:42) A friend of mine considers himself a good husband and father because he provides for his family. I was present when he came home late from work, expecting his dinner to be ready, and ensconced himself comfortable in front of the TV. And why didn’t he enquire of his wife how her day went? Didn’t she also toil? “Her role is to look after the home,” was his bland reply. Today’s Gospel reminds me of this incident. Woman in Jesus’ time had no part in Synagogue affairs. Their role was to cook and clean and see to their children and husband’s comfort. Martha accepted this role. Mary didn’t. She realized that pondering in God’s word was of prime importance; everything else was secondary. Why did Jesus visit the sisters? Perhaps he wanted to share how his mission was progressing, the difficulties he encountered from those whose hearts were hard and whose minds were narrow. He hoped to find listening ear. We can be very particular about the minutiae of our liturgical worship and outreach programmes. There is a danger that we might neglect the spirit, in our concern for the practical. I need to reflect, “What is God asking of me? How do the people I serve feel?” We all need greater sensitivity. FRUIT: As we recite the Lord’s prayer let us pay special attention to “Thy will be done”. We exist to do God’s will – the better part.
