Like · October 24 at 6:07pm Phila Mfundo Msimang I am so impressed by this. I wish people would take the next step forward and educate themselves about religion in general. The political significance of the choice of Islam as the religion you identify with should not be underplayed in American culture, but the political statement does not amount to truth. Besides, Islam is not African either. It was brought here the same as Judaism and Christianity from Arabia. To take a step further than what Ali has said, you must realise that the are more authentic African religions. Africa has cultures and histories that stretch back way before the influence of the major world religions of today. At the time of slavery, a considerable number of Africans in West Africa were Muslim. That was because of the influence of trade and cultural contact with the Arab nations. I could go on. My point is that identity is constructed, and its construction is informed by ones socio-historical and intellectual background. Ali went a far way forward in bringing some of these issues to the fore and making people think about them as we see in this brilliant video. It is this generation now that should be asking itself in the same curious manner questions about the institution of religion itself, asking the tough questions about if there really is a God or a soul, and what being a black human being means in a world where we are too often made to question our humanity and our place in the human race. The problem has been well identified. What about the solution (or, at least, the response to the problem)? Mr. Ali used his fame to promote the lies of Nation Of Islam. He promoted a false religion, and we can all look back and know the Honourable Elijah Muhammed he mentioned was nothing but a fraud. NOI taught lies, and made up stories about spaceships and aliens and evil scientists who created us White Devils. THIS is the religion that Mr. Ali supported, and he claimed he didnt bother about racial equality anymore, but his support of a racist group suggests otherwise... Most forget all of the commonalities between Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Anyway, I wanted to tell you how impressed I, and my father were, with your fathers brilliance!!! He was so beautiful, so eloquent, and so talented to be able to make such stunningly true statements about gross injustice in such an appealing and non-controversial manner! And just because Jesus is depicted as a blonde haired, blue eyed white man in Da Vincis paintings, doesnt make Christianity a white mans religion!
