Massive shock that Rik Mayall died suddenly today. I have always been such a big fan; I started spelling my name after him from about the age of 10, and it sticks today. I demand that Channel 4 re-show every episode of The Young Ones in his honour. But despite the ingenious of that show, IMHO it was The New Statesmen that epitomised him. He initially inspired then led the generation that transformed comedy into the modern era in the UK, and I wonder if he, along with Elton, French & Saunders et al even influenced writers on the other side of the pond? I think so.
