Match Report AFC Wallasey v A&M Plant Hire . Prenton Park The fledgling squad sat in the Prenton Park changing rooms, adjusting shin pads, tying laces and familiarising themselves with new faces when their new manager Paul Davey welcomed everyone to a new football club where the game is played in the right spirit. AFC Wallasey was born. When the whistle blew and the game started AFC looked like the new side. Their opponents D&M Plant Hire (The Diggers) started the brighter and forced early corners. Luckily the back four were the quickest to click and kept them at bay. Just as AFC were starting to link up, there was a blow with Sam Courtney going off with what looked like a nasty twisted knee. On came Steve Baguley. And then came the moment that will go down in the history books..a low cross from the right by Mike Cunningham wasnt dealt with by The Diggers defence and Lee Davey pounced, cut inside two defenders and stroked it home into the bottom right corner. 1-0 AFC Wallasey! And theres where the game changed, suddenly the confidence flowed and with fullbacks Freeman and Hanaghan bombing forward, Diggers were on the back foot and couldnt handle the pace, power and crisp passing of AFC. Koumas took control of the midfield and the cultured distribution of Baguley really began to shine. With the second goal surely just a matter of time away, the ref blew for half time. Paul Davey urged everyone to keep up the momentum and the players duly obliged. Playing some lovely short, sharp and free flowing football, AFC began turning the screw. Second half substitute Paul Hardy was played through by a delightful long ball from Mark Cullimore and he beat the advancing Diggers keeper to slot home for 2-0! It was exhibition stuff now and with the ball regularly in the opposition third Jay Chesterman and Steve Davey linked up, continually bringing in the wide men and the ever charging full backs. Every time the ball broke it was eaten up by the totally dominant midfield pairing and so started the next attack. Seeing plenty of the ball, Tom Freeman had found his range and with a pinpoint deep cross the lively Hardy leapt to nod home his second over the keeper. 3-0 !! The exhibition football from AFC continued and after a series of close chances and a goal ruled out for offside, a precise Lee Davey corner was headed home by the third substitute Dave Kennedy to make it 4-0! With the trophy secured AFC took their foot off the gas, but for the Diggers there seemed no way past the resolute Williams and Cullimore. But suddenly an opportunity broke on the left of the area and a fired shot from The Diggers striker headed for the roof of the net, only to be brilliantly tipped over from Nash to produce one of the moments of the game. The full time whistle blew and the cheers went up from the travelling faithful in the main stand. AFC Wallasey had won their first game, their first trophy and kept a clean sheet. And so starts a journey....
