Match Report: Last Friday, about 3 weeks after the Bali Soccer Sixes Tournament, Bali Pugs FC went back in to futsal action. The Pugs were extra hungry for success after losing the previous 3 matches in futsal! Last win came over BROS in the end of April, and Friday the same friendly guys from the Bali Royal Hospital were the opponent ones again. BROS not considered to be one of Pugs’ strongest opponents ( hist. 4wins 2 losses) but definitely considered to be one of the friendliest. Friday’s game was never going to be a walk in the park for the Pugs FC was missing no less than 6 of its stronghold-players (!!); Brant and Jon left on holiday, Edd had work duties and Fuji had problems with his foot. Why Kadek was absent remained a mystery, like usual. Jan could not play due to an infection in his foot but he joined as coach. On top of that; Caleb, Andrew and Agus all had to show up late. Pugs had two guest-stars on the day. Pete, brother of Bali Pugs-supporter Mick, came along together with friend and colleague Dave. For Pete, a true Rugby-league fanatic, it perhaps was a step outside of his comfort zone. Dave had a full-on football history, but had not been playing for many years. Other Pugs were Ricky, Nicky, Michael, Zain and Hans. BROS playing in their shiny light-blue outfits, like always, showed signs of taking the challenge serious as their captain started his game-speech about 5 minutes before kick-off. Coach Jan reckoned the Pugs to be the underdog on the day, and a close score-line would be a good achievement. Pugs starting line-up: Nicky (goal), Dave, Michael, Ricky and Zain. Like expected BROS quickly became the team with most of the ball-possession. The ‘improvised’ Bali Pugs team struggled holding on to the ball. Hard work prevented BROSS from creating many chances. Bros who did well holding on to the ball, but lacked pace to outplay the Pugs. Pugs created about the same amount of chances on the counter attack, but lacked a good finish. Goals for both team were not coming easy, and after a bit of a false start for BROS the score remained close throughout the first half of the game. Substitutions were often made without coach Jan calling for it because of low stamina. After the game both Hans and Zain pointed out that the lack of sessions in the last couple of weeks had taken its toll. Pete and Dave went in and out for each other, both often grasping for air to breath. Dave’s football-background clearly showed looking good handling the ball, but he like many before him struggled with the lack of space given in ‘futsal’. Pete mainly relied on his physical strength and fighting spirit. Both guest-stars seemed to enjoy themselves. Michael was the Pug in form, on the day. Not only did he take full responsibility on his defensive duties, also Michael displayed great determination on the ball. After 20minutes or so Caleb joined and he gave the team a bit of a quality injection. With Caleb on Pugs became much more of a threat when on the attack. Al so Caleb troubled BROS with his trademark early pressure game. The 5-6 halftime score looked promising, and when Andrew arrived shortly after, there seemed to be a win in the making. With now both selection-players Caleb and Andrew combining Pugs started to get the clear upper hand. Andrew’s 7-7 equalizer seemed to be the beginning of the end for BROS. Nobody could have seen the crazy 5 minutes coming that would follow. During those five minutes; Dave, Agus (just arrived), Caleb and Andrew,- possibly one of the strongest available line-ups, saw 4 goals scored against them! Pugs while time ticked away rapidly, pushed hard but could not keep the backdoor closed. Final score: 11-15. Bali Pugs FC wants to thank Pete and Dave for coming out. It was good fun! Coach Jan was happy to have seen Michael back on it again, and wants to see him use his powerful shot a bit more. Also Coach Jan would like to say to Caleb that it is totally fine to dislike losing games hehe. Stay tuned! W. Tinggi.
