Match Report Lincoln College Newark 3 v BMC 5 The week commencing 13th of October 2014 will go down in history for two reasons Josh Parton got himself a girlfriend and the College football team had their 1st 11-aside fixture of the season away to Lincoln College Newark. As we boarded the minibus at college there was a whiff of optimism in the air either that or Ryan Crump had dropped one as he got on the mini bus. The Gaffer was driving…. glasses had been left in their case on the desk contacts in always a sign that he means business. The team ably assisted by James McKnight Cameraman and set piece advisor and Mercedes white Performance analyst arrived at Newark High school and confidently took the short walk to the dressing room. As the Team got ready The Gaffer and Rich had their final chat before announcing the team The cat Watkins had got the nod in goal, left back Andrews, a solid centre back partnership of Young and Parton and right back Mellerick. Whitmore started as the holding midfield player with Crump and Rushton playing in front of him providing the width was Snoop on the left and Grimshaw on the right Holding the ball up and linking play from the front was the slightly balding big man Brown. On the subs bench primed to come on were Hudson, Ward and ‘wall Hodson’ ready to make his 1st appearance after a long injury lay off. As we warmed up Rich took Whitmore to one side to give him the good news that he had been selected as club captain a handshake was made and chest pumped out Whitmore went to rally his troops. The game kicked off on time at 1:30pm and what a start Parton was inspired after finding love striking the ball sweeter than we have ever seen in. I wasn’t long before we took the lead a long ball down the left Snoop cut in from the by-line and drove the ball into the far side of the goal wrong footing the goalkeeper with a drop of the shoulder. After the 1st goal Lincoln had a good patch in the game they started to take a grip of the midfield and were making inroads down our right hand side, we struggled to get possession of the ball, against the run of play Mellerick won a challenge on the half way line and played a simple pass to crump who following a good run slotted the ball home to make it 2-0. Whitmore and Ruston were starting to string some passes together and we started to look much better playing some lovely diagonal passes in behind the full backs for Snoop and Crump to exploit. Crump hitting the bar with wicked curling shot Half time arrived and spirits were high Parton had, had a great half playing some great long passes Young was orchestrating at the back like a professional conductor. Andrews and Grimshaw providing good width and support throughout a really entertaining half. The slightly balding big man brown had some great touches bringing other people into play although the watching crowd had chuckled to themselves as he had been dealt with twice by a defender half his side. Ward who came on for Mellerick towards the edn had look assured in midfield making some nice passes and providing some much needed energy towards the end of the half… The second half kicked off and Lincoln looked to gain the advantage with some decent early play. Hudson on at half time for Andrews started to get to grips with the right winger and was linking up well with Snoop. After 10mins this paid dividends Snoop broke down the left the rounded one defender, rounded the same defender again threw in a little pirouette before slotting the ball into the open net a few minutes later Snoop down the left again made it 4-0 this was turning into a rout…. Credit to Lincoln college Newark who allowed us to play with 3 over age players at 4-0 we withdrew The slightly balding big man Brown and Snoop, Whitmore stayed on and was commanding the centre of the park ably assisted by Rushton ratting about picking up the bits and pieces sticking to his task well and linking up well with Andrews down the right making one amazing box to box run. As with the 1st half the defence looked strong with only the odd break down the flanks really causing us any worry. ‘The wall Hodson’ was now on the pitch holding the ball up like he had never been out of the game as Lincoln broke Hudson made a great challenge winning the ball on the half way line and playing a ball to ward who sent Crump down the wing he cut inside showing great strength and scored with a lovely finish across the keeper 5-0 time to withdraw Captain Whitmore a solid performance leading from the front. With 15mins to go we started to tire at the back but not wanting to bring the OAP’s back on we decided to battle and try and hold on as Lincoln College Newark came back at us with 3 unanswered goals Watkins had a great game some fantastic saves and bravely carried on despite needing a wee at half time and being knocked to the floor with a strong challenge. utility man Renshaw had a solid game finishing in centre midfield his 3rd position of the game... We danced our way back to the changing room happy with our afternoons work a good solid performance. The gaffer had put in a good shift refereeing the second half and drove the bus back happy in the knowledge that he had the best touch of the day bringing a ball down on a sixpence from a wayward defensive clearance… Well done boys onto the next one……
