Match Report – Medway Dragons Masters Festival – Sat 8th June 2013 Following a 5am departure, a squad of 21 Thatto Heath Masters arrived at the Garrison Stadium in Medway for the first Masters Festival to be there. What a great day it was (and night to), a great tournament was put on by the hosts, the games were played in true Masters spirit, all games finished 0-0, although just for the records Thatto Heath recorded victories in all 3 games!!! Rangey’s nerves must have got the better of him as he missed the team photo, due to a rushed visit to the toilet! V RAF A surprise selection in the starting 13 for Thatto was Pez Kenyon at hooker; Pez’s choice of footwear must be called into question though, a pair of Adidas Trim Trab of all things! Buy some boots Pez’ you tight git!!! Sadly Al Holmes had to depart the field early on due to a calf strain and he must have still been feeling the effect of it later that evening, when he fell asleep on his chair and completed a swan dive straight onto the floor of a pub in Rochester!!! The game was quite a cagey affair with some good skills and defence on show from both sides. The deadlock was broken when a sweeping passing move involving Winstanley, Craig and Ford resulted in a rare Tony Kenny try in the right hand corner. There was a quick reply from the RAF with one just before half time. There was a 2nd half try for Trigger following good work from Pez out of dummy half and a fine pass from Harris. Walkden rounded the scoring off, latching on to a pass following a break down the left from Rothwell and sprinting 30 metres into the left hand corner. V Crosfields This game was move of an open affair with both teams keen to promote the ball and get the ball out quickly to their speedy backs. Thatto were first on the scoreboard with a good individual effort from Craig; this atoned for some poor handling in the first part of the game. Crosfields hit back when their speedy left winger coasted through a poor tackle from Porter; the commentator up on the gantry could be heard saying “if they were giving out an Oscar for rotten tackle, then that one would be in the hall of fame!!!” Porter atoned for his error not long after when a fine offload with 5 men in the tackle got Heath moving forward; a startled Harris moved the ball on to Pez, the ball was shifted through many pairs of Heath hands and then following another fine offload this time from Tony Kenny, Trigger touched down. Probably the try of the game went to Paul Stanley with a fine Prop Forwards effort, he came on to a precision pass from Eric Peace and the angle of his well-timed run allowed him to touch down to the right of the post. V Medway By now both teams were somewhat fatigued and only one try was scored in this one, an interception score from Andy Craig early on in the game. The game is probably best remembered for a bombed effort in the 2nd half from Dave Penny. Instead of passing to either Ford or Porter who had an easier passage to the line, Dave decided to take on and beat 3 would be defenders and would have been rewarded with try of the tournament, had he not dropped the ball over the line Mark Elia stylee!!! Man of the Tournament Pez (for his trainers alone) The squad (all played) Davy Barrow Alex Porter Andy Craig Tony Kenny Martin Ford Ian Rothwell Ian Winstanley Martin Horton Darren Harris Kevin Gormley Ricky Page John Ledger Paddy Mitchell (Captain) Paul Stanley Eric Peace Carl Briscoe Kevin Range Kieran Lacey Al Holmes Nigel Wright Pez Kenyon Jason Walkden Dave Penny
