Match facts for Germany - Portugal This is the 100th World Cup match contested by Germany, who are the first team to reach this milestone. The Germans’ record in the competition stands at 60 wins, 19 draws and 20 defeats. Their maiden match took place on 27 May 1934and culminated in a 5-2 win over Belgium. The sides square up for the 18th time and it is Germany who have fared better historically with nine wins to Portugal’s three, the other five matches having ended drawn. Die Nationalelf also won the last three meetings, including the match for third place at the 2006 World Cup, which ended 3-1 following a Bastian Schweinsteiger brace and a Petit own goal for the Germans, with Nuno Gomes replying for the Portuguese. Germany have won their opening match in every World Cup since 1990. In the group round of the last two World Cups, Portugal conceded just once in six matches. That goal was scored by Jose Fonseca in the 2-1 success over Mexico. Germany coach Joachim Low has already guided his charges to two victories over Portugal at the UEFA European Championship, 3-2 in the 2008 quarter-finals and 1-0 in the group round in 2012. Low’s opposite number in that 2012 encounter was current Portugal coach Paulo Bento. Source : FIFA
