Match report 16. The Ship (h) 9th July After contacting at least two dozen people the stand in skipper, substitute Wednesday night organiser and lay saint somehow managed to find a full team for this fixture against the ten man ship. The visitors batted first and were restricted to just 13 runs off the first four overs due to excellent bowling from someone’s brother and someone’s son. A bowling change brought on one of our normally reliable regulars who went for 48 in four overs, which, to quote our occasional club skipper, was a ‘nightmare’. Never the less, he who doesn’t want to be fined too much, (4.0.20.3) and his youthful companion (4.1.18.1) did very well to salvage the situation. However, those wickets cost us dearly for the Ship were able to bring back their two retired batsmen and, according to the very reluctant scorer, they finished on 125. Our response was promising against some very accomplished bowling. Sunday’s deputy scribe (it would seem the match report posting needs underlining to open it ) got into the runs at last and retired on 25. Our guest from Fairlands and the man behind the enormous beard contributed well, before the pantomime villain from the first innings made amends with an unbeaten retirement. In fact we only lost four wickets in total but our scoring rate against the Ship’s strong bowling was not enough and we finished the twenty overs 8 runs short. The names have been withheld to protect the innocent. A . Nonamous
