Math Studio begins Fifty-six students met one day this past week at A.P. Giannini Middle School in San Francisco to hold the inaugural meeting of an innovative peer-to-peer math tutoring program. The 26 tutors volunteered to meet before the school day started to teach 30 peer learners the principles of math. The program concept originated with a student, Mariel Goldberg, and was enthusiastically embraced by the school principal Michael Reichle when it was presented to him. “Math studio is a place where kids feel free to explore new ways of thinking, new modes of discovery, and encounter learning agents from their own peer group who are there to help without self-interest or judgment. Reichle said. Mariel Goldberg, the team leader on the project said, “I think a student can learn easier from another student because it’s more comfortable. I hope Math Studio will become a model for other schools.” The math studio program is totally run and directed by the students. Participation is completely voluntary and is scheduled to continue weekly until the end of May.
