Mathew Staver, Chairman Liberty Counsel Action The IRS is once again the center of controversy. The FBI has announced they will not pursue criminal charges against the offenders of the IRS targeting. The announcement incensed several leading members of Congress. Meanwhile, congressional negotiators working on the omnibus appropriations bill have proposed language declaring it to be illegal for the IRS to target groups or individuals based on political criteria. Roger, The Wall Street Journal is reporting that FBI officials will not press charges against any perpetrators of the IRS targeting of Tea Party groups and other conservative values organizations. The WSJ further reports… “Instead, what emerged during the probe was evidence of a mismanaged bureaucracy enforcing rules about tax-exemption applications it didn’t understand, according to the law-enforcement officials.” These findings are almost laughable. The rogue IRS employees knew exactly what they were doing! They were doing the will of the Obama administration and suppressing his political adversaries. This announcement should come as no surprise to anyone after we recently learned that the Department of Justice official spearheading the investigation was a major partisan supporter of both Barack Obama and the Democrat Party. ++The “investigation” has been riddled with partisan bias. Last week, The Washington Times reported that the FBI waited seven months before they contacted any of the organizations which were victims of the IRS targeting. Representative Darrell Issa (R-CA) and Representative Jim Jordan (R-OH) were infuriated by the questionable FBI investigative procedure, their refusal to brief Congress, and their decision that no criminal wrongdoing occurred. In a joint statement, they said… “These revelations further undermine the credibility of Attorney General Holder and the Justice Department under his leadership. Given the circumstances, there is little reason for the American people to have confidence in this investigation. Anonymous – and apparently politically motivated – leaks from unnamed law enforcement officials further undermine the public assurances by the current and former FBI directors that this is a legitimate investigation. These leaks come after the Justice Department, citing the confidential nature of the investigation, refused to brief Congress on its progress and congressional investigators independently discovered that a high dollar contributor to the Obama Administration failed to recuse herself.” Liberty Counsel Action is among the leading organizations calling for a special congressional investigation since the news of the IRS targeting first broke. ++Congress takes action against the IRS, thanks, in part, to the friends of Liberty Counsel Action! The Washington Times is reporting that congressional negotiators have agreed on a government spending plan to fund the government through October of this year. They also added language “outlining strict rules to prevent the IRS from targeting groups for ideological scrutiny, and specifically banning the agency from targeting citizens ‘for exercising any right guaranteed under the First Amendment.’” If passed by Congress, language against IRS targeting will codify what should have already been understood to be a criminal act.
