Mathias Schleiden (1804-1881) was a German scientist who studied cells. He stated that all plants are made of cells, which eventually helped lead to the creation of the cell theory. In 1838, he wrote Contributions to Phytogenesis (1838), in which he stated that the different parts of plants are composed of cells. He also recognized the importance of the cell nucleus, discovered in 1831 by Scottish botanist Robert Brown, and its connection with cell division. He concluded that all plant parts are made of cells and that an embryonic plant organism arises from one original cell.
