Matthew Henry THANKSGIVING: Thank God for His Grace to your Soul and for Designing Mans Redemption and Salvation The goodness of his grace relating to my soul and the life that is to come. But especially blessed be the God and Father of my Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed me in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places. Ephesians 1:3(ESV) 1st, I must give God thanks for his kindnesses to the children of men, relating to their better part and their future state and his favours to the church in general. I must give thanks for his gracious design and contrivance of man’s redemption and salvation, when he was lost and undone by sin. O how wonderfully did the goodness and loving kindness of God my Savior appear! He saved me, not because of works done by me in righteousness, but according to his own mercy: Titus 3:4-5(ESV) I had destroyed myself, but in you, and you only, was my help. Hosea 13:9(KJV) When I was cast out on the open field, and no eye pitied me, you saw me wallowing in my blood, and said to me, “Live!” Yes, you said to me, “Live!” Ezekiel 16:5-6(ESV) And the time was a time of love. Ezekiel 16:8(KJV) When the ransom of the life was so costly as that it could never suffice, and truly no man could ransom another or give to God the price of his life, Psalm 49:7-8(ESV) then you were pleased to find a ransom, that I might be delivered from going down into the pit. Psalm 51:8(ESV) Let the blood of Jesus your Son cleanse us from all sin, 1 John 1:7(ESV) and purify our consciences from dead works to serve the living God. Hebrews 9:14(ESV) And as an evidence that you have forgiven our sins, we plead with you, give us grace to forgive our enemies, to love those who hate us and bless those who curse us; Matthew 5:44(KJV) for we acknowledge that if we do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will our Father forgive our trespasses. Matthew 6:15(ESV) And therefore we forgive, Lord; we desire heartily to forgive, if we have a complaint against another, as the Lord has forgiven us. Colossians 3:13(ESV) Far be it from us to say that we will repay evil, Proverbs 20:22(ESV) or that we should avenge ourselves; Romans 12:19(ESV) but we pray that all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamour and slander may be put away from us, along with all malice; and that we may be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave us. Ephesians 4:31-32(ESV) O make us merciful, even as our Father who is in heaven is merciful, Luke 6:36(ESV) who has promised that with the merciful he shows himself merciful. Psalm 18:25(ESV)
