Matthews Statement on the passing of Jim Flaherty Jim Flaherty...the big dog...rest in peace. For some reason Jim was in the House when I gave my first budget-related speech. The essence of my speech had something to do with the government implementing the least effective stimulus measures according to their own budget documents. Jim rose from his seat. My colleague, Robert Chisholm, sitting next to me said, Oh, oh....you got the big dog up! With his self-deprecating humour, Jim often made light of his height. He saw himself more the leprechaun than the big dog. But, irrespective of what one thinks of the budgets, the big dog is more befitting of his political stature in his country over nearly two decades of political life. While his humour was often a velvet cover on a punishing counterpunch, I will miss him in the House as one of the very few whose performances I looked forward to. His was an art worth watching, listening to and learning from. Rest in peace, Jim.
