Mauao - What will $50,000 get the community? In whose pockets will it end up? Im struggling to understand exactly what will be learnt for this extravagance, mindful staff asked for $10,000 initially, and that apparently none of the existing staff are qualified to assess. Begs the question in the absence of information, who requested the additional $40,000 and for what purpose? It this another mechanism to provide additional funding to specific interests? Matt Cowley supports the expenditure saying reviews are important given the significance of Mauao and use - Agreed! But surely its management and outcomes would be constantly reviewed, assessed, modified. Not every 16 years! Appreciate that with the change in ownership, now Maori, a broader review is likely long overdue. Lets hope the secret meetings and briefing mind-set of the present Council is more inclusive of the community from the outset to avoid any surprise and predetermined attacks on the public! I predict public huge costs unfolding and greater public access restrictions in response to new learning and safety, cultural concerns! I predict this review might be used as the vehicle to extend the ownership boundaries to include the motor camp and hot pools, possibly a key driver for this review and increased budget! Id like to see it made into a wild life reserve alongside its cultural / historical significance. Id like to see investment in information panels at strategic points on the walk around and up - long overdue. Id like to see a couple of pay and display donation machines at the Pilot Bay and surf sides to encourage folk (visitors, tourists, regular users) to contribute to its upkeep and enhancement, rather than just syphoning off the profits from the motor camp. sunlive.co.nz/news/76363-mauao-under-council-review.html
