Mauritius: Scenarios What are the scenarios for the little island of Mauritius, totally dependant on the outside world? First what do we get income from? . importing tourists . exporting sugar So obviously our income will gradually reduce, with drastic drops when we will lose such and such market. Socially, we will see more and more poverty, unemployment, crime, disparities. Think about how many people rely of constant arrival of tourists at Plaisance. One day, Europeans wont be able to afford a 10 hour plane ticket anymore. How many people rely on the well being of our sugar exports.. One day, Europeans wont feel the necessity to import sugar from such a distance.. On the other hand, goods will be more and more costly. It is very likely that price of basic goods will rise up to 3, 4 or 5 times. Think about rice, flour, grains, cooking oil... Let alone the diesel itself. The state wont be able to sponsor power and water anymore.. Remember that your salary will be overall cut in half at least. And think that a major part of the population will not be employed anymore. Major civil unrest, crime and insecurity are bound to happen. When ? Maybe not tomorrow. But the situation will start to get unseasy from around 2020, which is very soon, will get worse and worse. If we do not react now, when we still have the means, some savings, we are heading towards chaos ans anarchy.
