May 22, 23, 24 – Gathr Indie Film JFK The death of John F Kennedy remains among the most compelling mysteries of the 20th century. But what may be more significant are the actions he took that provoked such extreme resentment. Narrated by Morgan Freeman JFK A President Betrayed uncovers new evidence that reveals how JFK boldly reversed US government policy to embark on secret back-channel peace efforts with Nikita Khrushchev, Fidel Castro, and other sworn American enemies. The film brings to light how JFK was subverted by his own advisers and considers how the world might have been different had he lived. 7 pm - $7 gathr.us/films/jfk May 25 - Family Sunday ~ BB King - Life of Riley World-wide Release Narrated by Morgan Freeman featuring never-before-seen interviews with Bono, Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, and many more! Broughton is a role model of living one’s life to the fullest, or follow your own “weird” as he called it. 7 pm, $7 June 17 – Gathr Indie Film “Return to HOMS” This is a rare opportunity to share an amazing film that is crucially important to understanding world events happening RIGHT NOW. RETURN TO HOMS, a beautiful and brutal on-the-ground view of the war in Syria, won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance this year, the Audience Award in Madrid, a Special Jury Award at San Francisco International, and was just awarded Human Rights Watch’s Nestor Almendros Award for courage in filmmaking. Variety called the film, “a remarkable achievement in immersive conflict-zone filmmaking”, and the New York Times wrote “Like its heroes, we are pulled into the conflict with frenzied immediacy as we experience one city, the dreaded rites of passage of two friends, and ultimately an entire nation torn apart by the fog of war”. The doc follows a group of young revolutionaries in the city of Homs in western Syria. As their peaceful demonstrations are met by increasingly brutal reaction from Bashar al-Assad’s army and their city transforms into a ghost town, the young men begin to take up arms. The protagonists are two friends: Basset, the charismatic 19-year-old goalkeeper of the national soccer team whose revolutionary songs make him the voice of the protest movement, and Osama, a 24 yr old media activist and cameraman. RETURN TO HOMS expands the viewer’s understanding of this tragic conflict and what it means to take up arms in revolution. 7 pm, $7 June 18 - Weird Wednesday Film hosted by Weird Harold’s June 19 – Gathr Indie Film “Return to HOMS” June 20 - University of Iowa Respect: A Musical Journey of Women Presented by the University of Iowa Hosted by the Burlington Professional Womens Organization.
