May 29, 1969, The Celeste Courier The Celeste Fire Department will sponsor a clean-up campaign with the Celeste Lions Club and Celeste City Council as co-sponsors from May 12 - May 24, 1969. Individuals will have assigned areas. Solon Milton wrote, Lets get rid of all sore spots such as broken down cars on streets, broken-up concrete, grown up and junked lots. The June draft call for Texas was 1,366 down from 1,453 for May. The proposed consolidation of the Gober and Bonham school districts received overwhelming approval by voters in the two districts on Saturday. Only twenty-three voted against the measure in Gober; only seven in Bonham. Jacque Bickham was in VA Hospital in Bonham, Room 302. A cradle shower honoring Mrs. Phillip Wilburn was given recently in the home of Mrs. O. L. Nichols, Jr. Other hostesses were Mmes. G. W. Tillerson, Ira Hunter, Doug Armstrong, Van King, Bob Felty, and Tommy Arey. Out-of-town guests were the honorees mother, Mrs. S. W. Thompson and her sister, Paulette Thompson, both of Sulphur Springs. Mrs. Wilburn is the second grade teacher in Celeste. Mrs. Jack Griffis, Harlan Griffis, and Tom Griffis moved to the home formerly owned by Miss Annie Williams on South Eighth Street. Elmer Helms has taken over the Premier Station on Highway 69, formerly operated by Billy Mulkey. In Washington, H. R. Bill 10617 was being introduced to make it a federal offense with heavy fines and/or penitentiary sentences for those who destroy property, disrupt classes, and commit bodily harm on the campus of a school receiving federal funds. Ray Roberts was sponsor. On behalf of the National USO and the members of the Armed Forces, Mary Myers, Paula Lanier, and Barbara Doan, thanks were given who made the drive in Celeste a success. Mr. Warren had just returned from five years in Pakistan and one and a half years ___ where he edited the Law Journal for the Pakistan Supreme Court. His last year in Asia was spent in Japan where he studied the language and culture. He used one of Dr. Sewards books in his studies and came to Celeste to meet the author of the book. The Blue Devils Den by Glenda Burnett and Tommie Creed: Deborah Harrison was second place winner of the Conference B State University Interscholastic League Typing Contest in Austin. Deborahs score was 153.84, which means 53.84 words with no error. All conferences take the test at the same time. Deborahs score was better than first place scores in Conference A, AA, and AAA. Judy Justus and Pam Duncan came home from State with a second-place medal in double tennis. The sophomore homemaking girls were helping with the PTA Style Show, titled Fashion Riot. Eighth grade track ribbons went to Roy Hall, Bobby Walker, Allen Wolfe, and Auda Derby. Fifth grade students wrote poetry. They were: My Scooter I went to an auction Saturday at Henslee Hardware Lots and lots of people were there. The bidding began about 11:00 oclock Selling the old and the new to reduce their stock. I bid on one thing and then another But lost my bids until I saw the scooter. What am I bid? the auctioneer cried. I yelled,One dollar, for the scooter Id spied. There is no exception to this rule. Transfer blanks are available in the County Superintendents Office and in all independent school districts of the county. The computer age changed some things, Mrs. Lewis noted. The days of taking the light bill to the bank for payment would be no more. Texas Telephone and Telegraph had changed their date of billing, but the subscriber could still trek to City Hall (and visit with Elzada) for payment or authorize her to debit your bill from your bank balance. Lone Star Gas sent the bills all punctured with holes signifying the monster mechanical brain, but it could still be paid at City Hall. Mrs. Lewis continued, But no computer can take the place of the man on the job... a man with a brain and a backbone...appreciate the man with the tools and the know how.
