Congratulations to Sara Holcombe!! She earned a Presidents Volunteer Service Award, granted by @PruSpirit, on behalf of the president. Florence Middle School is FOCUSED on attendance. For the month of April, we had an average attendance of 92.13%. The 7th grade averaged 25 absences per day, while the 8th grade averaged 29 absences per day. Students need to be prompt in arriving before 3:15, and parents need to be prompt in picking up their children at 4:15. Mrs. Holliss English Language Arts classes – A/R tests for the 4th Nine Weeks were scheduled to be due on May 7, but I have extended the deadline to May 14. I am giving students an EXTRA week to READ and to get those A/R tests completed. STUDENTS should COMPLETE their daily starters EVERY day. Starters will be due on May 20. Students should have completed 41 starters by May 20. PLEASE remind your child to finish their starters EVERY day. 8th Grade Accelerated English: The assessment about Joan Bauers Hope Was Here will preliminarily begin on Monday, May 5. Ms. M. White’s classes - The AR deadline for the 4th nine weeks is 8th period, Monday, May 19. Students are responsible for one (1) book. Be sure to follow requirements discussed in class. Mrs. B. White’s Classes- The last day to take an AR test for Mrs. B. Whites class is May 16th. Mrs. Bragwells Science classes - You need to return your signed homework policy sheet if you have not yet. This is a homework grade. Mrs. Bragwell will mail home copies to be signed and returned. If you have a zero in INOW for this grade, you have not returned this sheet. 8th Grade Science - Science teachers would appreciate donations of glue sticks for the classroom. The FMS Science and Math departments are doing a joint fundraiser for Science Olympiad and Math Team. We are selling Florence Falcons stylus pens for $2 each. Mrs. Reaves Art classes - The annual juried exhibit of art work by 7 through 12th graders was judged. FMS was represented well. We entered 26 artworks and two were awarded Honorable Mention. The two artists are Alex Calvo and Chasady Vandiver. We also had a seventh grader, John Morton, enter artwork on his own and he was awarded Best of Show! The exhibit was open to the public March through mid-April at the Kennedy-Douglas Center. We had several students with artwork accepted into this exhibit: Alex Calvo, Sydney Petree, Claire Williams, Maggie Huang, John Morton, Garrett Dickinson, Haley Grissett, Kywn Garrett, Makaila Swinney, Mary Elizabeth Lane, Morgan Freebeck, Elizabeth Infanger, Stephen Money, Kortnee Nichols, Glenn Rogers, Karly Grace Holt, Abby Nipper, Alex Moses, Eve Pennington, Day Robertson. All of these students had artwork on display. Below are just three examples of the 386 artworks included in the exhibit. LABELS FOR EDUCATION - Labels for Education are being collected to add to the art room supplies. Please collect and bring to the Middle School office. BAND NEWS Please feel free to contact me with questions at [email protected] UNA Honor Band – The following students were selected for the UNA Honor Band (April 24-26): Sydney Grissett, Rebecca Branham, Emma Phillips, Katherine Pitts, Donovan Elsey, Nathan Grissett and Grayson Johns. A BIG congrats to these students! If you applied this year and were not accepted, please apply again next year! They only take around 150 middle school students each year out of the 400+ that apply. SPRING CONCERT – Our Spring HMS/FMS Band Concert will be held at HIBBETT Middle School on Tuesday, May 20th at 7pm (Big Gym). The FHS auditorium will be under renovations at the time of our concert, so the HMS administration has kindly allowed us to schedule our concert in their gym. We will operate just as we did for the Christmas Concert. All FMS students should arrive no later than 6:30pm, and will be seated in a marked section of the bleachers. Additional information was sent home with students on Tuesday, April 15th and also posted on Edmodo. The FMS Concert/Beginner Band, Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, Percussion Ensemble and Chamber Ensembles will be performing, AS WELL AS the HMS Beginner Band! This is a PIRATE-themed concert which will be fun for everyone! SPORTS NEWS FMS Football- 7th & 8th gr. – season over JV – season over Freshman Center – season over Varsity Football – season over The FMS Falcon & Lady Falcons basketball teams – Boys & girls basketball will be conducting tryouts on May 20th and 21st in Coffee Gym and Sanderson Gym, for upcoming 9th grade and above players. May 22nd & 23rd, in Coffee Gym and Sanderson Gym, will be for for upcoming 7th and upcoming 8th graders. Times will be determined by next week and will appear in the next newsletter. Softball Results from Thursday, April 24, to Saturday, April 26- I would like to start out by saying Thank You to all the teachers who were involved in Teacher Appreciation Night! I saw many smiles on players’ faces. I want to say thank you for those of you who stayed to watch the game. You cannot realize the importance of this night for the players. This event means so much to them. I personally want to thank each one of you who was asked to be a part of this event. Since we have started Teacher Appreciation Night, this is the first year where we did not have a teacher back out or not show up to the event. Thank You!!!!! Thursday night’s game, April 24, turned out to be an interesting game. Florence was in a battle with Russellville. Florence won 4-0, behind a solid defense, plus Ellison Barretts pitching performance (7 innings, 1 hit, 16 strike outs and 1 walk). The offense was led by Ellison Barrett and Aly Clemons, 2 hits each. Ellison and Hannah Shollenberger each had 2 RBIs. Friday and Saturday, April 25th and 26th, Florence played in the Hoover tournament. Fridays opening game was against Oak Mtn. Florence won 2-1. Madison Kasmeier pitched a gem, going 5 2/3 innings, giving up 2 hits. Ellison Barrett entered the game with 2 outs and recorded a strike out to end the game. Oak Mtn. had the tying run on second base. Davis Watkins, Lakien Dillard, Madison Olive, Aly Clemons each had a hit for Florence. The second game of the night, Florence played Pinson Valley. This game was closer than the first game, with Florence winning by the score of 1-0. Ellison pitched 5 innings, and had 4 hits, 6 strikeouts and 0 walks. The offense was led by Ellison Barrett with 2 hits. Davis Watkins, Lakien Dillard, Hannah Shollenberger, Alex Jones and Blakely Turner each had a hit. The game was won in the last inning on a 2-out base hit to left field by Hannah Shollenberger to score Ellison Barrett. Saturday morning, Florence played Auburn and defeated them by the score of 6-0. Ellison Barrett pitched 4 innings, with 1 hit, 6 strikeouts. Lakien Dillard and Alex Jones had 2 hits. Ellison Barrett, Madison Kasmeier, Hannah Shollenberger, Madison Olive and Blakely Turner each had a hit. Elimination tournament started around 11:30 Saturday morning, with a matchup against Thompson. Florence lost by the score of 2-0. Thompsons pitcher kept the Lady Falcons in check all game. We managed just one hit, and that was by Hannah Shollenberger. In the 7th inning, Ellison Barrett took the loss, pitching 7 innings, with 5 hits, 5 strike outs and 2 walks. Our record for the season was 37-12. The second season started Thursday, May 1, at Austin High School with the Area Tournament. Florence opened the double elimination tournament against James Clemens. The tournament concluded Friday evening. Finishing in the top 2 positions will qualify the team for Super Regionals, which will be next weekend in Huntsville. I want to say Thank You! to everyone in the school system that has supported the team throughout the year. We hope that you LOVE reading and will LOVE bringing in books to help support this project. FBLA - Our FBLA student organization is new to FMS. Last year was our first year, with 7 members. This year, it has grown to 21 members, and our first group ever went to state competition. Please congratulate the first ever WINNERS for FBLA Middle Level for Florence Middle School at a state competition! These two girls won after competing with students in the entire state in the Career Exploration test! This event focused on career plans and goals, job applications, cover letters, resumes, interviews and other employment skills. These girls were the top two in the state!!!! The FMS Robotics Team – TSA – The Technology Student Association students attended the state conference at the University of Alabama in April. It was a fabulous trip, filled with memories that will last a life time!!! Im so proud of our students, respectful, classy, well-behaved competitors. This was a great group! And lots of fun! T S A Family and Consumer Science (FCCLA) - Math Team - The FMS math team meets on Thursdays from 3:05 until 4 pm. 7th grade meets in Ms. Harris room 215, and 8th grade meets in Mrs. Barnetts room 212. The end of year party, with Math Team and Science Olympiad, is on Thursday, May 8 from 3:30 - 5 at Diebert Park. Special congratulations to Maggie Huang for scoring perfect on the Pre-Algebra math test and receiving 2nd place as an individual. This year’s school-wide Geography Bee Winner is Adith Bondugula of the 7th grade. For those who know him, please congratulate him on a job well done. Yearbook 2014 – is being printed! PTO – Come to the PTO meetings, join ($20) and be an informed parent. Officers: President-Cynthia Southward; Vice President- Debbie Williams; Secretary-Sandy Holcombe; Treasurer-Rhonda Blackburn Chorus – The FMS chorus is preparing for the end of year Spring Concert!! We are having a great time, but working very hard. The concert is scheduled for May 15 @ 6:30 p.m. in the FMS auditorium. The week prior to the concert there will be some necessary after-school rehearsals, but those have not been set at this time. The talent show will be May 16 @ 1:45 in the FMS auditorium. Any student wishing to be a part of the talent show needs to get a form from the office or the chorus room, and submit it to Mrs. Powell no later than April 29. The audition day is May 1, beginning @ 3:15. Scholars Bowl Team – In April, members of the Florence Middle School Scholars Bowl Team competed in the 2014 District Tri-County Scholars Bowl Competition at Northwest Shoals Community College, Phil Campbell, Alabama. These students, Nikhil Boorgu, Grant Brown, Allison Carter, Emma Kate Griffin, Haley Grissett, and Samuel James, advanced to the finals, after competing against other middle school scholars bowl teams. Of the eleven teams participating, the Florence Middle School Scholars Bowl Team was the SECOND PLACE WINNER OF THE TRI-COUNTY SCHOLARS BOWL TOURNAMENT. In this tournament, recognition is given to the outstanding teams and outstanding individuals. Nikhil Boorgu, an eighth grader, ranked over sixty-three middle school students. Please congratulate Nikhil for being the third highest individual scorer on the TRI-COUNTY SCHOLARS BOWL ALL TOURNAMENT TEAM. The 2013-2014 Florence Middle School Scholars Bowl Team has performed outstandingly this entire season.
