May ask for help from this group to identify by uniform, which war this ancestor of mine is wearing? If it is Civil War, this man would be Martin S. Grout of Hartland (descendants would be family names of Grout, Irish, Crafts, Aldrich, Harrod, Bisher, Bedford, Waite, Whitehead, Fry, Cummings). He enlisted in NY 1st Light Artillery, Battery M - died September 1862 on Potomac River, likely of wounds at Battle of Antietam. Martin Grout arrived in Niagara County around 1830 with his family from Weathersfield,VT via St Lawrence county, NY) to Wilson NY where his uncle, William P Grout, a local merchant was instrumental in Wilson Marina becoming a port of entry in 1848. His father and grandfathers, Elihu Grout and John Hamblin served in the Revolutionary War -- Therefore, his descendants can also apply for Sons or Daughters of the American Revolution / Sons or Daughters of Civil War Union Soldiers. If this isnt a Civil War uniform, it will be his son Gilbert or Cortland in uniform for the Spanish-American War. In the 2nd photo, he is wearing a suit and you can see his Odd Fellows pin. I have an extensive family tree on Ancestry. Please private message me if you think you are related and we can share family history. Thank you!
