May be of interest? The School of Biochemistry and Immunology - TopicsExpress

May be of interest? The School of Biochemistry and Immunology will host the last lecture in the current series of Biomedical Frontiers public lectures on Wednesday, April 9th. Dr Ed Lavelle will deliver a lecture titled Nano or no no? The Biological Effects of Nanoparticles We are exposed to environmental particulates on a daily basis from carbon particles in exhaust fumes to dust and sea spray so understanding the consequences of this exposure for human health is a priority. While exposure to exogenous particles including silica and asbestos can result in serious health problems, endogenous particles and crystals generated within our bodies including uric acid and cholesterol can likewise result in chronic disease. On the other hand nanotechnology offers the potential to design and produce novel nanoparticulate systems to address major health problems. A key factor in all cases is how particles engage with our immune system. This talk will describe how the characteristics of particles and where we encounter them can dictate their interactions with our immune system and how this information can be exploited. Event Details: Date: Wednesday, April 9th Time: 6:30pm Venue: Stanley Quek Theatre, Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute, Pearse Street All welcome and admission is free For further information please contact Nóirín: [email protected].
