May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 15:5-6: (ESV) Paul has been writing the book of Romans guided by the Holy Spirit and in the midst of discussing different personal convictions we have as individuals, he suddenly breaks out into prayer for unity and then goes back into the subject about which he had previously been writing. Personal convictions are part of the Christian life, but that is exactly what they are, personal. There are some things in my own life I have been convicted to set aside, but those things apply to me personally. The problem comes when you begin to preach to others what you have been convicted of personally. Following the instructions given to us in the Word is one thing, all Christians are to obey the Word; but personal conviction is another thing entirely. Often division occurs because of personal conviction. Unity is so important in the body of Christ. What unites a church together is not doctrine. What unites a church is vision. We can discuss our differences, but once the discussion is over, the best thing to do is put our arms around each other and laugh, because when we get to heaven God will straighten all of us out!
