Maybe it was just me, but this is how I was taught....years ago! It was not called Common Core, it was called common sense.....The teachers now have taken this to the extreme, making them break down the simplest of problems into something that they have to draw boxes for and then add the boxes together to make columns, to add the columns together to make bigger boxes, just to add in cubes, and then they have to count the boxes , columns, big boxes, and cubes to get the answer. I get some people are visual learners and those techniques work, I had that benefit too, the school had actual block and cubes and columns to use, in the classroom. Maybe this is why I understand and use math with no problem....oh and I had a teacher who didnt trust calculators in 5th grade, so I had to show all work.....well after that year, I knew math and could do it all in my head.
