Maybe one should explain what is considered when music is - TopicsExpress

Maybe one should explain what is considered when music is prescribed especially in an infant competition like NCCMU Eisteddfod. Imagine us having to prescribe 8 new song that have never been sung in the Choral fraternity – you can think the stress the conductor has to go through. Research, research and more research – bearing in mind the lack of material we have mo Northern Cape. By over prescribing new material- soloist and choirs tend to be reluctant in taking part. Maybe it’s because we not where we think we are musically! I think, therefore what those one do? 1. You prescribe music that has been sung – but not so recently though, Reason: you try to entice past singers who has sung the song and to motivate those who have not sung the song but heard the song before. 2. You also prescribe music that is in the space – obviously for easy access and recording are already in the space and research is already done. Therefore you expect and 80+ performance from singers. Worse we not giving workshop on the music – (might change in the future) lol...this also motivates singers to take part cus it won’t be the stress of learning new music. 3. Again we know that not all choirs have a variety of soloist in their possession – for instance 1 choir wud have 1 soloist who is brave enaf to take on the music – so a conductor wud ask the soloist to sing the solo soprano, duet, trio and the O de Joy quartet – poor child. 4. Also you consider the confidence level of singer by past performances – what was the outcome of prescribing new music last year? Chi mi frena (no participants) - how was the execution of the music on new music? Poor! 5. You consider the level of competition itself – level of musicship. There is much to consider when we prescribe music – trends and patterns will determine next year’s music, scoring and execution also will determine the readiness of choirs to prescribe complexity music. Slowly but surely we will get to the level where we prescribe new music that has never been sung – and when we do that, we will be 100% sure that our provincial choirs are ready and CAN conquer the music. Also if u you see, we don’t prescribe base on genre of music for now. We give variety purely to identify where our strong points are – where do we excel, again checking our scorings and execution. I hope this will explain and put some minds to ease. Can’t Wait for 2015!! Zeus.
