Mayo Clinic is the first health system to offer Cologuard, the first and only U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved, non-invasive DNA colorectal cancer test. Effective, Monday Oct. 27, the test, co-invented by Mayo Clinic and Exact Sciences, will be available for Rochester providers to order for their patients. This new noninvasive colon cancer screening test is for people 50 years and older, asymptomatic and at average risk for colorectal cancer. The test is easy to use, and patients can do it in the privacy of their own home. It does not require medication, dietary restrictions prior to taking the test, or bowel preparation. If the test is positive, patients must undergo a colonoscopy. A clinical trial showed this new colon cancer test to be highly effective at detecting colon cancer at its most treatable stage. By offering a noninvasive test that can be done in the privacy of the home, it is expected that more patients will get screened earlier, potentially saving thousands of lives. As part of a regular wellness appointment, patients should discuss with their primary care physician, nurse practitioner, physician assistant or other health care provider if they qualify for the test. Once again, Mayo at the forefront of discovery!!!!
