Mayor Gimenez is currently proposing closing 22 out of the 49 - TopicsExpress

Mayor Gimenez is currently proposing closing 22 out of the 49 branches of the library system to keep the Miami-Dade budget flat. For the past several years, the libraries have been using reserves to continue operations, and now this money has been used. As an ex-reading teacher, current school administrator, and adjunct professor of Education at a local university (Reading and ESE), I am absolutely appalled at this disregard of the damage this potential lack of literacy resources will cause for the students of all schools within Miami-Dade County, both public and private. By limiting the availability of books and computers, they are limiting the potential for literacy for our future . . . our students. For those of us who are not currently students, a library can still be a magical place, full of books which can lead us to dream and imagine. It is also an incredible source of information, much more credible than what we can obtain on the internet. Closing our libraries also limits these experiences. Please repost this and call attention to this horrible situation. Call or e-mail your county commissioners to let them know about your thoughts on this matter.
