‘Mayor excited by rail forum TRACTION continues to build for high-speed rail in Australia with Wagga’s mayor saying there were many positive developments at a forum that drew international experts. Councillor Rod Kendall attended the forum held at Parliament House last month to outline the advantages high-speed rail would have to the Wagga area. Also present were international experts from China, France, Spain and Japan’s high-speed rail committees. “I think it went well, there’s a fair way to go – it’s a long-term plan for the nation,” he said. “The general feeling is that the next move would be for the government to adopt the study in principal and securing the rail corridor and passing legislation. “I think from Wagga’s point of view and what we heard at the forum is that having the high-speed rail stopping in the community would be a real driver for development.” Also present were mayors from Wodonga, Shepparton and Goulburn. The federal government’s final report on the project, released in April, said the high-speed rail link connecting Brisbane with Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne would cost $114 billion and be completed in 2053 at the earliest. In May, Wagga City Council signed a memorandum of understanding to form part of a coalition of councils to lobby for the high-speed rail project.’ dailyadvertiser.au/story/1652147/mayor-excited-by-rail-forum/?cs=332
