Me: Par aapko aapki tankhwaah to milti hai naa?(But you do get your salary, don’t you?) He: Haan jee, lekin kaafi nahi hai. Mai aur bhi kuch kuch karta rahta hoon extra paisa kamane ke liye. Is maheene thoda beemar pad gaya tha isliye extra kaam nahi kar paaya, ab bhugat raha hoon(Of course, but it is not enough. I keep doing other things too to earn some extra money. This month I was not well, so couldn’t manage the extra work. Now I am bearing the brunt of it.) Me: Lekin teen sau rupaiye se kya hoga?(But how much of help these three hundred bucks will be?) He: Maalik kuch nahi se kuch bhala(Something better than nothing sir) Me: Achcha le jaao(Sure. Take it.) He: Sir jaldi lauta doonga(I’d return it to you very soon sir) Me: Koi pareshaani nahi, jyaada kaam mat karo jab tak tabiyat kharaab hai(That’s not a problem and don’t overwork till you are unwell) He: Aur kharche ka kya maalik(But who’d take care of the expenses sir?) Me: Achcha suno, har maheene ki paanch taareekh ko mere se teen sau rupaiye le lena, jab tak theek naa ho jaao(Okay, every month on 5th you can take three hundred bucks from me till you get better.) He: Dhanyawaad Maalik, aapki bahut meharbaani, kah ke nahi bata sakta (Thank you so much sir, can’t express in words, how grateful I am.) 8 month back, I was talking to my society guard who appeared tired, overworked and most importantly poor. Three hundred bucks was and is not a big deal for me but certainly was a relief to the poor man. And then started a cycle - every month on 5th he asked for money and I gave it to him uncomplainingly. He never got better. And then last weekend, I was out of cash. In the generation of Credit and Debit cards, this is a very common scenario. He: 5 kaa tay hua thaa naa? (We decided for 5th, right?) Me: Tay hua thaa (Decided?) He (realizing his mistake) :Galti ho gayi maalik. Muh se nikal gaya. Mera matlab mera matlab thaa ki aapne kaha tha naa ki paanch ko har maheene paise dijiyega aap( I am so sorry sir; it was just a slip of tongue. I mean I mean you told me that you’d give me three hundred bucks every month. ) Me: (Hmmm…Ab samajh me aa raha hai, tum kabhi theek nahi hue, and mujhe kabhi fark nahi pada. Ab sahi lag rahe ho tum, extra kaam shuru kar do(Hmmm…Now I see the funny side. You never got better and I never cared. Now you look fine to me, now you should start doing the extra work.) Sometimes we make people so dependent on us that we make them indolent and useless. And then over a period of time they start taking us for granted. Kindness and compassion is absolutely necessary in today’s times and we must help the deprived. But that in no way implies that we make them worthless just because we can afford it.
