Me and many of my schoolmates were suspended and i ultimately was - TopicsExpress

Me and many of my schoolmates were suspended and i ultimately was kicked out of highschool in 10th grade due to a rap i performed at our first Black history assembly. We as Students wasnt having it though. One thing led to another and boycotts protests court cases and community mobilization was in full effect. Newspapers all over florida were reporting the story and the experience put me on the path of music and activism dead prez has become known for. The Tampa tribune printed this back in 1990 about the incident: A high-handed approach by local school officials isnt helping matters in Wakulla, where race relations have been strained since a black students rap poem was yanked from a Black History Month program Feb. 28. At one point schools Superintendent Roger Stokley wrote to a group of concerned black parents: ``If our system doesnt meet your particular needs or desires, then maybe you should consider an alternate school system that may meet your desires or wants.`` The parents organized to fight the suspensions of several dozen black students who boycotted classes in protest after Wakulla High School Principal Wade Nobles banned the poem, Black as I Can Get. The parents challenged the suspensions in court, picketed the school and packed a School Board meeting to complain that the black community was being treated unfairly. Theyre now considering whether to sue the board. At the time little did I know how that incident was a necessary part of my life path and how much it steered me in the direction I would grow into. I give thanks we dont always know why we go through certain things but Ive learned its all a part of our development and some of the most challenging times are blessings in disguise. #reflection
