#MeaningfulPrayer Part4# Salaah should be treated like an important event; and like any event, preparation needs to be made to ensure its success. There are general preparations that need to be made which include but are not limited to; leaving sins, increasing in good deeds, decreasing in vain and unnecessary indulgences, increasing in the recitation and study of the Qur’aan, increasing istighfaar and other adhkaar [supplications] and continuously self-reflecting and repenting. When the time for Prayer approaches then *Make intention for the prayer mentally – begin emptying your mind as this helps you to see the Prayer as a special event not just a ritual act that has to be undertaken. *Remind yourself that waiting for the prayer is considered prayer too. *Make intention and perform wudhu and perform it well. Remember to make dhikr and say the du’aa after it. Stop to think how all your sins are washed away and how you will be identified as being from the Ummah of Muhammad [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam] by your wudhu marks. *Wear your best and cleanest clothes, because Allaah says: “O Children of Adam! Take your adornment (by wearing your clean clothes) while praying…” [Al-A’raaf 7:31]. Allaah is most deserving of seeing us “take our adornment” for Him. Clean, pleasant smelling clothes are also more comfortable and relaxing, unlike clothes for sleeping or working in. *Call/reply to the adhaan – this makes the shaytaan run away. *Recite the du’aa after the adhaan. *Recite du’aa’ between the adhaan and the iqaamah. *Praying in congregation – if you cannot pray at the Masjid then pray with colleagues, friends or your family. If possible find someone you are comfortable with. Before every prayer, remind each other that you are now going to talk to Allaah. Remind each other of Allaah’s attributes or things you are grateful for, or the fact that you need forgiveness. *Make the rows straight and solid, without any gaps, because the shayaateen come in through the gaps in the rows. *Assume a calm state; there should be no rush or hurry...give enough time for Prayer; you don’t have to recite long surahs; recite short ones if you must but give every action its right. Try to remove as many distractions as possible for example: -Put mobile phones on silent – not vibrate; but silent, away from your sight so you don’t see the flashing light of an incoming call or text. -If something is cooking turn it off so that you do not worry about it burning. -Let those around you know that you are praying so they don’t call you during your prayer. -Pray in a quiet place, not in the same room where others may be doing other activities which may distract you. -Make sure children are safe – if possible ask someone to look after them whilst you pray so you -Do not pray when there is food prepared that you want to eat otherwise you will not be able to concentrate. -Do not pray when you are suppressing the need to urinate or defecate -Praying with a barrier (sutrah) in front of one and praying close to it as this will restrict your field of vision, protect you from the Shaytaan and keep people from passing in front of you, which causes a distraction and reduces the reward of the prayer. In short you need to strive to push away all distractions that make you think of something other than the prayer itself, and ward off thoughts that keep your mind off the purpose of the prayer. This is something which differs from one person to another, because the extent of waswaas/whispering has to do with the extent of one’s doubts and desires and the heart’s focus and dependence on what it loves, and its efforts to avoid what it dislikes. #MeaningfulPrayer Part4#
