Media Release April 1, 2014 Officers Assaulted at Mid State Correctional Facility Marcy – A 24 year old inmate serving a 1 to 3 year sentence assaulted several correctional officers yesterday morning at Mid State Correctional Facility. The incident occurred at approximately 8:35 a.m. in the housing unit of the medium security facility just west of Utica. The officer was calling out to the inmate, who was watching television, trying to get his attention. The inmate ignored the officer and continued to watch TV. The officer approached the inmate to find out why he was not responding. He remained unresponsive to the officer until he got up from the bench and punched the officer in the left side of the head. The inmate continued to assault the officer and a struggle ensued between the two, with both falling to the floor. Additional officers responded to the assault and they were able to restrain the inmate as he continued to kick and lunge at them. The officer assaulted sustained an injured shoulder, left knee and neck. He was treated for his injuries at Little Falls Hospital and released later in the day. He did not return to duty. Three other officers sustained minor injuries while trying to restrain the inmate. All stayed on duty. The inmate, who was convicted of Coercion 1st in Kings County in 2013, was placed in a special observation unit. He faces internal disciplinary charges at this time. Criminal charges have not been filed at this time. “This unprovoked attack is just another in a series of assaults on staff that have occurred in correctional facilities statewide. In 2013, assaults on staff were at a five year high as a result of a more violent prison population. We will continue to advocate for better safety measures for our membership and monitor the current situation,” stated Central Region Vice President John Gavin.
