Media Release File 13-28089 On November 22, 2013, at approximately 10:25AM, members of the Medicine Hat Police Service responded to a residential 911 hang up call from a female in Crestwood area of Medicine Hat. The female caller appeared to be in distress. Upon arrival at the scene members forced entry into the residence and found that it had already been vacated. From evidence in the residence police believed the resident was at significant risk of harm. Containment points were immediately set up within the City of Medicine Hat and a suspect vehicle was located travelling west bound on the Trans-Canada highway. Police attempted to stop the vehicle but the driver failed to stop. A vehicle pursuit was initiated due to safety concerns for the female occupant of the vehicle. The vehicle pursuit continued westbound on the trans-Canada highway into RCMP jurisdiction. The RCMP subsequently took primary control of the pursuit. A collision occurred which met the Serious Injury or Death Protocol under Section 46.1 of the Police Act. The RCMP notified the Director of Law Enforcement who subsequently directed that the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) investigate the circumstances surrounding the pursuit and collision. The Medicine Hat Police Service and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are conducting a joint investigation into the circumstances surrounding the events that led to the initiation of the pursuit. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team will be responsible for the release of information surrounding the circumstances of the pursuit and collision.
