Media Release Funding arrives for One Mile Bridge Betterment The State Government has approved funding under the joint Commonwealth and State NDRRA program in order for the One Mile bridge betterment works to start. The bridge was damaged by flooding events in 2009, 2011 and again in 2013 with the total value of repairs from the three events is estimated to be $1.9 million. The January 2013 event caused embankment scouring, undermining of the bridge’s wing-walls, pavement scouring and damage to kerbs, barriers, and drainage systems. Member for Ipswich West, Sean Choat said upgrades to the bridge are vital to mobility, particularly for residents in One Mile and Leichhardt. “The closure of the bridge, particularly following the most recent flooding event has significantly impacted on the mobility of local residents. The Betterment proposal for the One Mile Bridge involves an upgrade to drainage, embankment protection and the replacement of the existing bitumen.” said Mr Choat The One Mile Bridge is a four span concrete bridge that provides critical community and social access for Ipswich residents. The bridge has traffic volumes in excess of 20,000 vehicles per day and also provides secondary access to the RAAF base at Amberley. When the bridge is closed, it causes major flow-on impacts on local roads and the Warrego Highway. Mr Choat said funding for the project was a part of the State Government’s agenda to focus on economic growth, rebuilding, and making Queensland more resilient. “This funding means Council can now get on with repairing the bridge and constructing more flood resilient community infrastructure.” Mr Choat said.
