Media Release: Point Fortin Desalination Plant Marks Closer Step to ‘Water For All’ Minister of the Environment and Water Resources, Senator the Honourable Ganga Singh, while delivering the keynote address at the formal commissioning ceremony for the new Point Fortin Desalination Plant, at the Petrotrin Marine Facility, Point Fortin on Wednesday 4th September 2013, stated that the vision of ‘water for all’ articulated by him eighteen years ago, is within reach. Minister Singh said that this is based on the level of innovation, vision, leadership and aggressive implementation demonstrated by the Government over the past three years. The facility, which has a production capacity of 4.6 million gallons per day, was constructed by the Seven Seas Water Corporation in 14 months under a Build, Own, Operate arrangement. The plant commenced initial production in July 2013 and has improved the level of service to over 29,000 residents of South West Trinidad, who have seen their supply increase from an unreliable, scheduled 24/1 or 24/2 supply to a minimum of 24/5 and 24/7. Some of the areas include Mahaica, Clifton Hill, Pt. Fortin (Proper), Newlands, Reservoir Hill, Harriman Park, Egypt Village, Fanny Village, Gonzales, Parrylands /Lot 10, Cochrane, Vance River, Techier and Hubertstown. Furthermore, Minister Singh indicated that since 2010, the Authority has re-focused its efforts on improving the level and coverage of water and wastewater services, with the award of 373 contracts valued at approximately TT $2 billion. Head, Political and Economic Section at the United States Embassy, Keith Gilges, who also delivered remarks, underscored the importance of a reliable and safe water supply to the development of any society and congratulated the Government on the initiatives undertaken to improve the level of water service provided throughout Trinidad and Tobago, particularly in Point Fortin with the commissioning of the new desalination plant. President, Seven Seas Water Corporation, John Curtis, expressed his satisfaction with the completion of the new facility, despite the challenges experienced along the way. He also spoke of the expertise the company has developed over the years in developing desalination plants in the Caribbean and North America.
