Media Release: WASA addressing Wastewater issues in Arima - TopicsExpress

Media Release: WASA addressing Wastewater issues in Arima Water and Sewerage Authority advises residents of Arima that steps are being taken to address the issue of proper wastewater collection and treatment in the Borough over the short to long term. This includes day to day operational plans to ensure that various wastewater lift stations are operating at optimum; incorporating wastewater facilities into WASA’s collection system; and construction of a new Malabar Wastewater Treatment Plant, along with additional collection system and individual sewer connections that will ultimately lead to the entire catchment being covered by a centralized sewerage system. The Authority wishes to assure residents that the Dundee, Santa Rosa Springs and Fiddlers Dream wastewater stations referred to in recent media reports, as releasing raw sewage into the environment, are in fact highlift stations used to pump wastewater along the collection system to the Arima Wastewater Treatment Plant. As such, there is no release of wastewater from these facilities into the environment. The Tumpuna Villas Wastewater Treatment Plant is a privately owned, abandoned facility, which is not connected to WASA’s collections system, however, the Authority currently carries out de-sludging of the tanks at the facility twice weekly, while a long term solution is implemented. This solution involves the installation of 310 meters of wastewater mains that will interconnect the Tumpuna Villas area to WASA’s collection system with final disposal to the Malabar Wastewater Treatment Plant. To address the wastewater collection and treatment needs in Arima over the long term, the Authority is scheduled to begin the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) funded Multi-Phase Wastewater Rehabilitation Programme in November 2014. This will involve the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant and associated collection system that will be able to meet the current and future needs of the entire catchment, which includes the following areas: • Calvary Hill • Mausica/Olton Road • Cleaver Road/Andrew Lane • OMeara Road • Arima • Mt. Pleasant/Maturita • Upper Pinto Road/Gills View • Upper Malabar/Tumpuna Road • Santa Rosa East/West • Peytonville/Carapo • La Horquetta/Greenvale These works will take place in three phases over an eight year period. The first phase will see the construction of the new plant and connection of the collection systems from Arima, O’Meara Road, Malabar and La Horquetta/Greenvale areas. It should be noted that this information was conveyed by WASA’s representative at a recent Borough Corporation meeting, during which time Mayor of Arima, George Hadeed, stated his pleasure with the work and plans outlined by the Authority regarding wastewater collection and treatment in the Borough. visit wasa.gov.tt/WASA_Media_Press.html for updates and details.
