Media advisory UNICEF charter with life-saving nutrition supplies to arrive in South Sudan 17 April 2014, Juba, South Sudan What: A United Nations Humanitarian charter plane will arrive tomorrow morning at Juba International Airport carrying 2,575 cartons of “Plumpy Nut” ready to eat therapeutic food to treat malnourished children. This flight will bring the total number of charter planes bringing in the supplies to four, for a total of 10,300 Plumpy Nut cartons that will be used by UNICEF partners to treat malnourished children. The supplies will be picked up at the airport by UNICEF partner the International Rescue Committee (IRC). When: Thursday, 17 April 2014, 9:45 am – 11:00 am (local time; GMT+3) Please arrive on time as media will need to be escorted onto the tarmac. Where: Juba International Airport (Arrival Gate), Juba, South Sudan Why: UNICEF and partners have estimated that, as a result of the conflict that broke out in December, the number of children who will suffer from severe acute malnutrition in 2014 will double to almost a quarter of a million. Unless they are reached with treatment, including ready to eat therapeutic food such as Plumpy Nut, up to 50,000 children are likely to die. Who: UNICEF and IRC will be available to talk about malnutrition in South Sudan and the use of ready to eat therapeutic food.
