Media release Palmer Gives Pensioners an extra $150 per Fortnight Senate leader of the Palmer United Party in South Australia, James McDonald, today announced his party will raise pensions by $150 per fortnight if elected on September 7. Mr McDonald said the new pensioner “living wage” would provide a 20 per cent increase on the present basic rate for the aged pension, from $733.70 to $883.70 per fortnight for singles and $1,106.20 to $1327.40 for couples.” Mr McDonald said both Labor and the Coalition had neglected aged pensioners, who deserved much more respect and better treatment from government. “Australia’s senior citizens need proper representation because they have been forgotten about by the major parties for far too long,’’ Mr McDonald said. “The inability of successive governments to manage the economy has had a devastating impact on our seniors, who are struggling to cope with rapidly rising living costs. “Australia’s senior citizens have worked hard and delivered to their families and local communities for all their lives. But they have been forgotten and taken for granted by Kevin Rudd and Tony Abbott.” Mr McDonald said the Palmer United Party would be introducing a pensioner living wage. “Australian pensioners who have given a lifetime of work to this country deserve a better deal than have been receiving under successive Labor and Coalition governments which is barely more than is given to newly-arrived asylum seekers,” Mr McDonald said. “The Palmer United Party is ready to deliver for our senior citizens. They have been forgotten by the major parties. To ensure they have a pension that allows them to live properly, the Palmer United Party is the only answer.’’ ENDS For further information please call James McDonald 0498 091 405
