Media statement 13 September 2013 Te Mana o Ngāti Rangitihi to seek mandate from iwi Te Mana o Ngāti Rangitihi Trust (‘Te Mana’) will begin a series of hui in October to seek a mandate to enter into direct negotiations with the Crown for the comprehensive settlement of all Ngāti Rangitihi historical Treaty of Waitangi claims. Te Mana’s mandating strategy has been approved by the Office of Treaty Settlements (OTS) and it is now able to proceed to seek a mandate to act on behalf of the iwi. Te Mana Chairman Graham Pryor says this is an important time for Ngāti Rangitihi. “What we need is a clear mandate from the people to speak for all of Ngāti Rangitihi. “Ngāti Rangitihi are a strong people, who have experienced adversity for generations. We need to come together as one and present a united voice to the Crown. We owe it to those who have gone before us, our rangatahi and all Ngāti Rangitihi who will come after us,” says Mr Pryor. Te Mana will hold six hui across the country beginning in Rotorua on 12 October and ending in Matatā on 20 October. The purpose of the hui is to provide information about Te Mana and the mandating process, and to also hear from the iwi. A presentation will be given at each hui regarding the claims and the way forward for the comprehensive settlement. Iwi members will be able to vote on the mandate resolution at the hui. Or, if they choose, they will be able to vote through a postal/internet ballot, before, during and following the six hui. To be eligible to vote in the mandating process, iwi members must be 18 years of age or older and be registered with Te Mana o Ngāti Rangitihi Trust, and/or descend from the tupuna Rangiaohia and Apumoana, through the tupuna Mahi and Rangitihikahira; and from the tupuna Rakeiao. Application forms to register with Te Mana will be available at the hui and on the website ngātirangitihi.iwi.nz Mr Pryor says while the mandating strategy has been approved by OTS, details such as the lead negotiators will not be confirmed until a mandate has been obtained. Following a successful hui-a-iwi held last month, Te Mana will hold another hui-a-iwi on 29 September in Matatā, to discuss a number of matters relevant to the iwi including the mandating process.
