Media stories are referencing a Gallup poll about the uninsured - TopicsExpress

Media stories are referencing a Gallup poll about the uninsured rate in our state. Heres the real story: These numbers are based on a poll of Kansans and do not accurately reflect the number of uninsured Kansans. In 2012, the U.S. Census Bureau reported 12.91 percent of Kansans were uninsured, official numbers from the U.S. Census Bureau for 2014 will be available in the fall of 2015. In July there were approximately 424,000 Kansans on Medicaid, up from 398,924 in July 2013, more than a 6 percent increase. Kansas Medicaid enrollment has increased significantly. This indicates access to Medicaid is not driving any reported increase in the uninsured. Any reported increase in the uninsured most likely is driven by increasing costs and lack of access to private insurance driven by Affordable Care Act mandates and requirements. This provides insight into why a majority of Americans continue to disapprove of the ACA.
