Medical Assistant Swedish Covenant Hospital (Chicago, IL) **_JOB SUMMARY_** Assists in the delivery of primary health care and patient care management by performing clerical and specified clinical duties. **_RESPONSIBILITIES_** *Essential Functions* ** Demonstrates a commitment to the mission of Swedish Covenant Hospital and a patient service orientation that adheres to all responsibilities and standards established by the Hospital.* **1. _Communication_.** Functions as a receptionist, answers phones, conveys messages, coordinates physician and patient schedules and other related information to others as appropriate to maintain effective working relationships in the delivery of patient care. 1. Greets all patients friendly, courteously and respectfully; registers patients, copies insurance cards, verifies insurance when necessary. Maintains a positive attitude with patients, physicians, and co-workers at all times. 2. Responds and delivers messages accurately and in a timely manner. 3. Uses appropriate etiquette and telephone procedures when placing, receiving and transferring calls. 4. Maintains the strictest patient and personal confidentiality. **2. _Clerical_.** Performs a variety of clerical/administrative duties as assigned to ensure efficient utilization of time within the health center. 1. Maintains patient files, records and other information; files all incoming patient record documents in designated location in patient records. 2. Assists with appointment scheduling of off-site tests and procedures, consultations, surgeries and treatments. 3. Make new charts for patients according to specifications, pull charts for appointments, forms when necessary, check charts for neatness and completeness. 4. Orders and maintains an adequate quantity of clinical supplies for patient care, as well as, office forms and supplies to ensure patient care. **3. _Documentation_.** Documents pertinent information in the medical records and maintains timely, complete documentation in other areas of record keeping to ensure accurate continuity of patient care. 1. Posts all daily activity, encounter forms and payments, balances at end of day, completes deposit tickets and makes deposits. 2. Copies and documents medical record releases following proper policy and procedures. **4. _Technical Skills_.** Performs designated nursing and other patient care activities according to established department policies and procedures and standards of practice to ensure patient physical and psychosocial well being. 1. Performs phlebotomy and fingerstick punctures; identifies and labels specimens accurately and conducts designated in-office laboratory tests. 2. Performs EKG, obtains vital signs, weight and height and documents findings accurately. *Other Functions* **5. _Environmental_. **Participates in maintaining an environment that is conducive to patient care, comfort, and privacy, as well as, employee safety. Recognizes hazardous conditions and responds either by correcting the situation or reporting it to the Practice Manager/Administrator. Demonstrates safe and proper usage of all health center equipment and attends equipment usage in services when offered. Ensures waiting room, examination and treatment rooms, bathrooms, medical record area, kitchen and all areas of the health center are clean and clear of refuse. **6. _Policy and Procedures_. **Observes department policies and procedure, environment and infection control standards. 1. Interprets hospital policies, regulations, standard to other staff, patients and visitors to ensure compliance. 2. Attends required annual in services on Safety and Infection control. 3. Observes OSHA regulations including principles of standard precautions. 4. Cleans the exam/treatment rooms after each patient and/or procedure including equipment used in accordance with infection control guidelines. **7. _Professional Growth_. **Participates in departmental meetings, appropriate inservices and educational opportunities. 1. Participates in departmental meetings, appropriate in-services and educational opportunities. **2. **Attends a minimum of 2 in-services per year and/or participates in other educational programs available at the hospital. **8. Other duties as trained and assigned.** **PATIENT CARE/AGE SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS** The incumbent must posses the ability to deal effectively all age groups from infants to senior citizens. **QUALIFICATIONS/BASIC JOB REQUIREMENTS** * Education: Graduation from an accredited program for Medical Assistants. Certification from the American Association of Medical Assistants desired. * Experience: 1-2 years in a physician’s office or an ambulatory care setting. * Clinical Skills: Knowledge of medical practice and care to assist in giving patient care. Knowledge of examination, diagnostic and treatment room procedures. Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment. Skill in assisting an a variety of office procedures as directed. Skill in taking vital signs. Skill in maintaining records and recording test results. Skill in developing and maintaining quality assurance. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, peers, medical staff, and the public. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.
