Medical Malpractice: Under Former Governor John Engler, the - TopicsExpress

Medical Malpractice: Under Former Governor John Engler, the Michigan Legislature enacted so called tort reform, specifically restricting the right of Michigan residents to sue hospitals and doctors over malpractice. Now there were abuses and many are aware of the lady who sued successfully over hot coffee that was spilt on her lap etc. However the Republicans and the hospital lobby in Michigan has succeeded in tightening up the tort system in this state, that it is almost truly impossible to sue any doctor or hospital. Plaintiff law firms have to have a nurse (who is usually affiliated with a hospital) on staff. These nurses pre screen potential malpractice cases, but guess what? In 99% of the cases, these nurses never find any malpractice, and the suit is NEVER filed. Michigan is one of only two other states with the most restrictive malpractice laws. Doctors and hospitals need not worry about malpractice in Michigan. Another example of social darwinism courtesy of the Michigan Republican Party.
