Meditation We don’t hear that word as much now, but in the 60s through the 90s, it was a popular idea. Meditation can take many forms. Making a conscious effort to replace negative thoughts with positive thoughts. Clearing the mind with a neutral chant or sound. Even concentrating on one of the senses or a body part. Basically controlling our thoughts not letting them control us. Worry and negativity have been a plague on mankind since time began. Meditation helps to immunize their affect. Depression, low self esteem and feelings of helplessness are born of worry and negativity. We can change those feelings by first recognizing them, then taking steps to regain control of our thinking. Because, ultimately, those thoughts will dictate our actions. Something that has worked well for me, whenever I’m getting stressed about something, is to head to the park for a few miles in the clean air. Since there is nothing I can do about what is concerning me for the next hour, I’ll not think about it. Instead, I’ll think about positive things or just let my thoughts wander. Another successful method is to make a decision to only think about the solution that I want and what actions I can take to make that happen. Most people that walk or run distance will remember times when they were in motion for a while, and all of a sudden, they thought of a good solution to a problem that had been concerning them. Super charging our thinking with a lot of fresh air and a serene setting can work wonders. Meditation with motion works well, not only with solving issues, but with relaxation. It is hard to be negative when moving forward surrounded by the amazing beauty of nature. Currently, many are choosing not to think at all but to escape into the cyber world of the cell phone. Some can’t even stop at a red light without pulling out the smart phone to text or check their social media of choice. Perhaps a step back to the basics of just being alone with our thoughts to make peace with them is out of vogue. But that step back may be the most important step forward that someone could make.
