It’s one thing to offer solid constructive criticism, guidance and insight, but even important was my role to offer encouragement, determination, discipline and empathy for my students who were eager to write their stories. My most influential writing instructors steered me towards reading great, innovative prose and gave me the tools to mine the ideas that bubbled beneath them—that nebulous “aboutness” that made the stories shimmer. My goal as a writing coach is to follow their lead by recognizing generous, conversational, attentive writing and allowing it to grow.
