Meet Betty! Betty is a lab mix who was adopted from the DRHS by Lisa, an Animal Care Technician at the shelter. Betty visits various facilities in Dubuque and the surrounding area as a volunteer pet therapy dog where she entertains and comforts residents. Betty was surrendered to our shelter on Thanksgiving Day in 2011 along with her 10 littermates. As time went on, most of her littermates found loving, forever homes while she remained in the care of our loving employees. Unfortunately, she came down with kennel cough and needed to be treated in a foster home. Lisa stepped up to give Betty the needed TLC to get better. While she had Betty in her care, she noticed how shy and scared Betty was in almost every situation; she would hide under anything she could find, she was afraid of people and dogs, and she wasn’t confident enough to go out for walks. When it was time for Betty to go back up for adoption, she had already become a part of Lisa’s family; Lisa adopted Betty just after Christmas and began working with her to build her confidence. She took Betty to pet-friendly businesses in the area, out for walks, and out to swim in area ponds. Two years and many hours of work later, Betty has gained confidence in herself and is a great pet therapy dog for the DRHS!
