Meet Brando #444 What teams have you played for as part of SCRD or other leagues you have played with/for? I am a fairly seasoned skater and have played with a variety of teams. I started my derby career with a recreation league known as West co roller derby, then, after playing for 1 year, I transferred to my first WFTDA league, Little steel derby girls, where I polished my skills and competed in many bouts (too many to remember). After 1 year playing with LSDG, I transferred to SCRD, where I have been playing for several months. Do you have any game day superstitions or rituals? On bout day, I try to pretend like it is a 100% normal day. Although it is impossible because bouts scare me half to death. I’m positively shaky at the first whistle blow. What SCRD skater/teammate do you look up to -- or have you learned the most from? Even in my short time at SCRD, I discovered that J-bomb is a skater, teammate, and coach to revere. She is an exceptional teacher, she is very patient but yet demanding, and she truly cares about the game and players of roller derby. What moves/skills should your opponent look out for? I like to think I’m very good at “slow derby”, right off the line I have very fun and entertaining footwork. I like to do 180s and 360s around blockers. I also am very “jumpy” and “jukey”. When did you start skating? I started skating in February of 2012. What position(s) do you play? Would you like to play? I almost exclusively play the jammer position. I love this position but I would certainly like more experience and expertise in the blocking positions. My blocking skill right now is pretty limited. Something SCRD fans dont know about you. In my personal life, I am a ph.d. fellow in the environmental sciences, I am very proud of this because it’s a fairly male dominated field and I’m a feminist 100 percent. As is expected, I also like to hike, backpack, rock climb, trial ride, and ride motorcycles, although there is unfortunately very little time for these hobbies.
