Meet Fletcher... . Fletcher D. Cleaves is a May of 2009 graduated from Cordova High School in Memphis TN. After graduation he was awarded a football scholarship to attend Lambuth University in Jackson TN. Tragically, the night before his freshman debut, September 10th, 2009 he was involved in a serious car accident where a distracted driver, presumed to have been texting and driving, ran me off the road. While trying to avoid them by swerving off the road, my car flipped into an embankment. The accident left Fletcher paralyzed from the chest down. This life changing event forced his parents to take a leave of absence from their jobs in order to learn how to become caregivers and help with his rehabilitation. Unfortunately, during this time they both lost their jobs. After an entire year of rehabilitation and learning how to adapt to his new disability, Fletcher transferred schools and moved closer to home. Fletcher now maintain 3.1 GPA as a Computer Science major at the University of Memphis. Since his disability, he has been relying on public transportation, parents, friends, and family in order to get to and from school. This list of individuals is limited whom he is able to ride with because of the space needed for his wheelchair. Also, these methods are not always been reliable and forced him to miss some days of school due to the simple fact he did not have transportation. In his past therapy sessions at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, GA, Fletcher received information on driving for people in wheelchairs. According to his physical capability, a modified four door GMC Sierra looked promising for Fletcher. The state of Tennessee would modify the vehicle for Fletcher but he and his family has to purchase the vehicle themselves. This is where YOU come in!!! The 25 Days of CLIFmas campaign will help Fletcher and his parents afford the necessary finances to help with the cost of providing new transportation and helping with medical cost. Your donations, no matter how big or small, will give Fletcher and his family the greatest Christmas gift ever; and it will show the world our continuous stand against the dangers of distracted driving. Everyday we hear of the shocking statics surrounding distracted driving, Fletcher provides a face and a story to those statics; please do not ignore it.
