Meet Kaya Thomas · Sophomore, Computer Science · Dartmouth Kaya was inspired to learn to code after hearing a TED talk by Kimberly Bryant from BlackGirlsCode. She went to Codeacademy and taught herself python and was instantly hooked. While interning at TIME last summer Kaya taught herself how to build iOS apps and built an app for Entertainment Weekly. She also made her own app We Read Too, a book resource app that showcases over 300 books written by authors of color featuring characters of color. We Read Too has received rave reviews from educators and parents, who finally have a consolidated app to find books for their children. Kaya says “the best way to learn programming is to first figure out what you are passion about. Computer Science can relate to any field you are interested in.” Kaya has continued to pay it forward and empowers other women by teaching them how to code. This summer, she mentored the winning team of 5 women at Black Girls Code in New Orleans, who were all new to coding!
